Robert asked, “What are you rattling on about?”

Twindale answered, “Mr. Deatherage didn’t want to notify you so as not to spoil your honeymoon.”

“I receive death threats all the time,” Mona replied. “What made Dexter, I mean Mr. Deatherage, think these threats more serious than others?”

Twindale and Spivek glanced at each other and then shrugged. Spivek replied, “We don’t know.”

“Do you have copies of these letters?” Robert asked.

“No, Your Grace,” Spivek replied.

“Of course not,” Robert muttered. He turned to Mona. “What do you think, Mrs. Farley?”

“I think we should devise a plan with these gentlemen to get to the bottom of this mystery.”

“We will help in any way possible,” both Pinkertons agreed.

“Good. While we’re at dinner, I want you to search the crew’s quarters for those jewels. I mean really search them,” Mona said.

Spivek spoke up, “Do you think a jewel thief would be stupid enough to risk hiding those jewels in his quarters? It seems like a waste of time to me.”

“I think the gems have already been pried from their settings and the gold has been melted into small bars. The seams in mattresses are an easy place to hide gems. I also want you to go through their personal items. Look for other things, too—odd things for the crew to have.”

Twindale asked, “What are we looking for?”

“You’ll know when you see it.” Mona added, “Twindale, I want you to search the women’s quarters alone.” She gave a warning glance to Spivek. “You are to search the men’s quarters.”

Twindale surmised, “The dinner hour is not enough time to search the crew’s quarters.”

“Start with the porter, bartender, barber, purser, steward, and maid’s living quarters first. Just do the best you can. I especially want the dead bartender’s room to be torn apart. There are answers to be had there. I don’t need to tell you boys to be discreet.”

“No, Your Grace,” Spivek answered. “We’ll do our best.” He felt a little smarted by not being trusted to search the women’s quarters. He thought it best to discard his French postcard as its discovery left a bad impression, but a bachelor must have some comfort on a lonely night.

Mona looked at her wristwatch and announced, “We will meet here at eleven. Don’t let anyone follow you back here.”

Spivek forgot himself and winked. “Don’t worry, Duchess. We have a room on this floor. In fact, we’re in the suite next door.”

It was Mona’s turn to feel embarrassed, and she wondered how much the Pinkertons had heard through the thin walls. She felt the urge to weep as this was not the honeymoon she and Robert had planned.

They had not been so clever after all, and it was costing them dearly.
